Calyos Joins the OSYRYS Clean Aviation Project Led by Safran Electrical & Power

Clean Aviation Call 3 Projects Kick-Off in Brussels

The HERACLES, DEMETRA, PHARES and OSYRYS consortia unite to build the Next Generation of Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft.

From 20 to 22 January 2026, the four consortia behind the HERACLES, DEMETRA, PHARES and OSYRYS projects met at the Clean Aviation headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, for three days of joint kick-off meetings. This gathering officially launched a five-year collaboration within the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking (CAJU), the European Union’s leading aviation research and innovation programme.

These meetings marked the beginning of a coordinated effort to accelerate the maturation of key technologies for the next generation of Ultra Efficient Regional Aircraft (UERA). As this new concept will be key to the decarbonation of regional aviation, the projects will benefit from €140 million in funding from Clean Aviation, complemented by more than €200 million in in-kind contributions.

A shared ambition for Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft.

The four projects share a common objective: to achieve a hybrid-electric flight demonstration that will validate technologies contributing to the overall objective of 30% CO2 reduction.

Each project contributes a critical building block to a common aircraft concept:

• HERACLES, coordinated by ATR, defines the Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft Concept.

• DEMETRA, also coordinated by ATR, ensures flight demonstration and validation of the concept.

• PHARES, coordinated by Pratt & Whitney Canada focuses on the development of the hybrid-electric propulsion system.

• OSYRYS, coordinated by Safran Electronical and Power, develops the electrical power generation and distribution solutions, thermal management solutions and avionics solutions for energy management.

OSYRYS: Pioneering Electrification and Energy Efficiency

As emphasized by Jaime Perez De Diego, CAJU Project Officer for OSYRYS:
"OSYRYS is a crucial project for the Regional stream in Clean Aviation, providing paramount power distribution and cooling solutions for the hybrid-electric flight demonstration platform and the next Ultra Efficient Regional Aircraft expected to enter into service in the next decade."

The OSYRYS project plays a key role in developing on-board electrical generation and distribution systems, as well as advanced thermal management and avionics solutions optimized for energy efficiency. OSYRYS innovations are essential for powering and controlling new hybrid-electric architectures, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting the seamless integration of novel propulsion systems.

With their recognized expertise in electrification and energy management, the members of the OSYRYS consortium are driving a critical technological leap towards more sustainable regional aviation. The project sets the groundwork for robust, certifiable solutions that address tomorrow’s operational and environmental challenges. The goal is to push the boundaries of electrification while ensuring safety, performance, and reliability.

The OSYRYS consortium, led by Safran Electrical & Power, brings together a diverse group of 24 industrial, research, and academic partners, including Airbus, ATR, Collins, Liebherr, Thales, and others.

Four Projects, One Common Ambition

With these joint kick-off meetings, the PHARES, OSYRYS, HERACLES, and DEMETRA projects have officially entered their implementation phase, launching a five-year collaborative effort under the Clean Aviation Programme. Bringing together all project teams and partners from the outset helped establish a common framework for cooperation across technology development, aircraft architecture definition, flight demonstration, and certification activities, which will be key to achieving the programme’s ambitions.

As the coordinator of both HERACLES and DEMETRA, ATR ensures alignment between aircraft design and flight validation, supporting the collective goal of paving the way for the entry into service of the next Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft by 2035. Building on 45 years of experience in the regional market, ATR also ensures that the technologies developed are fully relevant for airlines.

Calyos contribution

Within the OSYRYS consortium, Calyos brings its expertise in passive two‑phase cooling to support the development of efficient and reliable thermal management solutions for hybrid‑electric aircraft systems. This cooling approach—fully passive and pump‑free—helps manage high heat loads while reducing complexity, weight and energy consumption. Calyos’ role focuses on contributing robust thermal technologies that can assist the consortium in addressing key integration challenges for next‑generation electrical and avionics architectures.

Stay tuned for more updates on these promising projects.

About Calyos

Who We Are
Calyos is a leader in the design and manufacture of two-phase thermal management systems. Building on our heritage from Euro Heat Pipes (EHP) and their space technology expertise, we specialize in innovative cooling solutions that tackle the thermal challenges of tomorrow.
What We Do
We engineer advanced cooling technologies, including loop heat pipes, micro-channel heat pipes, and pulsating heat pipes, to optimize thermal performance across a variety of applications. Typically these include: power electronics, processors, and batteries, but we don't stop there we are continuing to develop and produce fully customizable solutions for other specific needs, for example e-motors and fuel cells.
Where We Operate
Calyos is headquartered in Charleroi, Belgium, where our engineering and production teams work side by side in a state-of-the-art facility. From this base, we serve a global clientele, providing our cutting-edge solutions across North America, Asia, Europe, and South America.
When We Started
Calyos was incorporated in 2014 as a spin-off from Euro Heat Pipes (EHP), which was established in 2001 and has become a major player in the European satellite market. Since then, Calyos has been adapting and evolving EHP's space-grade cooling technologies for terrestrial applications.
Why We Matter
Our mission is to lead the industry towards adopting the most effective and sustainable thermal management solutions. We aim to address the most pressing thermal challenges in the data-driven and electrified environments of today, leveraging passive cooling technologies to achieve superior efficiency and environmental stewardship.
How We Succeed
Our success is driven by our commitment to four core values:
1. Applied Knowledge - Transforming deep technical expertise into market-ready solutions.
2. Better Together - Emphasizing collaboration with all stakeholders to enhance our collective success.
3. Inherent Flexibility - Adapting our solutions and practices to keep pace with evolving market demands.
4. Continuous Research - Persistently innovating to maintain our leadership in thermal technology.
