Calyos and University of Pisa - DESTEC Take Flight in ESA Parabolic Campaign to Advance Two‑Phase Thermal Management

Calyos participates in the European Space Agency (ESA) Parabolic Flight Campaign No. VP191/89ESA with the experimental project EnSPire (Enhanced Spiral Pulsating Heat Pipe). The parabolic flight campaign will take place from 21 to 23 April 2026, following final integration and ground testing in Bordeaux, France.

What is the project?

The EnSPire project (abbreviation) stands for Enhanced Spiral Pulsating Heat Pipe with a hydraulic diameter riding on the capillary threshold.

What is on board?

The experiment includes:

  • A spiral pulsating heat pipe (SPHP) with a standard circular cross‑section
  • An enhanced spiral pulsating heat pipe (ESPHP) featuring a special cross‑section designed to improve heat transfer performance

Both devices were designed and manufactured by Calyos.

Purpose of the flight experiment

The objective of the flight experiment is to study how different gravity levels affect the behaviour of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) when the internal hydraulic diameter operates at the capillary threshold.

PHPs are two‑phase passive thermal management devices that rely on capillary action and phase‑change phenomena to sustain internal fluid motion, enabling efficient heat transfer without external power.

The thermal response of the two designs will be compared under variable gravity conditions:

  • Starting from pseudo steady‑state operation
  • During the start‑up phase

By comparing the two designs, the project aims to determine whether the channel enhancement leads to more efficient and stable operation under different heating and gravity conditions.

Project team & Acknowledgements

Calyos provided the pulsating heat pipes as well as technical support, while the preparation for the parabolic flight, including ground testing and documentation, was led by the University of Pisa (DESTEC).

Congratulations to both teams from the University of Pisa (DESTEC) and Calyos (Naoko Iwata, Vincent Dupont, and Antoine de Ryckel), for their collaboration on this project and for contributing to the advancement of research in advanced thermal management.

Next steps

The preparation of the rack and experiment box was completed last week, and the hardware has been shipped from Pisa to Bordeaux. The parabolic flights will take place on 21, 22, and 23 April 2026, following final preparation and ground testing.

About Calyos

Who We Are
Calyos is a leader in the design and manufacture of two-phase thermal management systems. Building on our heritage from Euro Heat Pipes (EHP) and their space technology expertise, we specialize in innovative cooling solutions that tackle the thermal challenges of tomorrow.
What We Do
We engineer advanced cooling technologies, including loop heat pipes, micro-channel heat pipes, and pulsating heat pipes, to optimize thermal performance across a variety of applications. Typically these include: power electronics, processors, and batteries, but we don't stop there we are continuing to develop and produce fully customizable solutions for other specific needs, for example e-motors and fuel cells.
Where We Operate
Calyos is headquartered in Charleroi, Belgium, where our engineering and production teams work side by side in a state-of-the-art facility. From this base, we serve a global clientele, providing our cutting-edge solutions across North America, Asia, Europe, and South America.
When We Started
Calyos was incorporated in 2014 as a spin-off from Euro Heat Pipes (EHP), which was established in 2001 and has become a major player in the European satellite market. Since then, Calyos has been adapting and evolving EHP's space-grade cooling technologies for terrestrial applications.
Why We Matter
Our mission is to lead the industry towards adopting the most effective and sustainable thermal management solutions. We aim to address the most pressing thermal challenges in the data-driven and electrified environments of today, leveraging passive cooling technologies to achieve superior efficiency and environmental stewardship.
How We Succeed
Our success is driven by our commitment to four core values:
1. Applied Knowledge - Transforming deep technical expertise into market-ready solutions.
2. Better Together - Emphasizing collaboration with all stakeholders to enhance our collective success.
3. Inherent Flexibility - Adapting our solutions and practices to keep pace with evolving market demands.
4. Continuous Research - Persistently innovating to maintain our leadership in thermal technology.
